Corporate Hippie Rock Stars: Heal Your Heart, Change Your Mind & Exercise Your Voice

By Sari Mustonen-Kirk Thursday, 21 June 2012

“All it takes is one moment, one second in time … one belief in who you are!” These are some of the lyrics from a beautiful new song called ‘One Direction’ by Franko and Kings out of New Zealand. (I will include links at the end of this blog for you to find and buy the song, read the lyrics and also hear it as a part of the next uROk.tv podcast.)

I chose to feature their new track in today’s blog because I’m feeling so excited by the growing shift in consciousness happening in all corners of the world in all industries. I feel like collectively we are on the verge of something really beautiful, special and enlightening.

Some two years ago, I was giving a presentation explaining the essence of what forward thinking Change Agents actually do to help facilitate positive change and foster sustainable growth. Ranging around my areas of passion and interest, I happened to use the terms ‘strategy’, ‘healing’ and ‘engaged communication’ all in the space of a couple of minutes. Long ago I gave up the fear of appearing kooky, and rather than trying to fit into any one box of traditional thinking, decided it was far more authentic and empowering to simply embrace the techni-coloured dream-coat that is my personal and professional life. After all, if you’ve been in the Hedge Funds game and simultaneously been initiated as a Reiki healer what else can you do but go with the flow of who you really are?!?

Further into the talk, someone asked me what I thought the defining characteristics of future leaders would be and the answer rolled off my tongue like it had been waiting a lifetime to be birthed: ‘Corporate-Hippie-Rock Stars’! (Ping – proverbial light bulb over head moment.) And although I laughed at the term, I knew it contained something special that would lead me (and many others) toward a far larger and brighter future than even I could’ve imagined. At the heart of that one little phrase lies great power and I’ll share with you my thinking on this.

Let’s start with the Corporate bit. I keep seeing the comments on so many blogs and forums about the general disenfranchisement with, and quite often vehement hatred towards, Corporates all around the world. But have you ever heard about the golden rule: “Them with the gold, makes the rules”. Instead of bitching and moaning about the power of Corporates, let’s get in there and show them a better way. No, I’m not going to chuck out my suit in protest! I love putting it on and mixing it up with the big boys: connecting the dots for them on how and why a moral and social conscience is absolutely necessary for their survival. Especially when you can illustrate very clearly that ignoring this vital fact means they’ll get hit where it really hurts – profits and performance.

Next the Hippie bit. These very same corporates are made up of human beings. Real people just like you and me and the very best and talented ones are leaving institutions in droves, disillusioned and disheartened by the lack of balance between commercialism and humanity. Once disengaged from the machine, many go on spiritual sojourns seeking to heal their hearts and looking for a way to atone for their various sins; coming out the other end with a desire to build new businesses that do real good in the world. But it’s kind of like throwing the baby out with the bathwater for most but a select few. They soon discover that although their hearts feel better they don’t end up making any money, and so the conflict begins anew. And so it is that although I love my suit, I'll keep my sparkly white linen top and pants too thanks!

Turn now to the Rock Star part of the equation. Let’s face it, we are a world still largely obsessed by celebrity and now with social media exponentially on the increase, anyone and everyone can enjoy the limelight. The dark side of this is; we slavishly follow anyone who looks successful and has lots of followers or likes and we forget to investigate whether there is any substance behind the smoke and mirrors of the marketing. What happened to a ‘body of work’? What happened to real value? What happened to talent? We risk becoming so distracted by the lure of celebrity, that no one is actually working on the business side of things generating profits that create jobs and fuel our economies. We rush to market with the latest shiny baubles instead of taking the time to create something of lasting value that people actually want and need. We talk the talk about human capital development, talent management, social conscience and worthwhile causes but have no time to actualize this in our own hearts. When the talk is not being walked, trust me, people eventually ‘feel’ this in their guts.

No matter what industry you’re in right now, accept that there is a massive convergence going on at the moment. If you want to be heard in a noisy world, you’d better learn to use all of the tools at your disposal: Head, Heart and Voice! Hence my ‘Corporate-Hippie-Rock Star’ analogy. And I don’t mean campaigning for it; I mean feeling it, living it, and having it clearly resonate as your personal and professional truth. I think the days of the dancing numbers on a spreadsheet are coming to an end. The days of clever marketing catch phrases that have no heart and soul to support them are nearing closure. The age of worshipping someone just because they’re famous for being famous, a redundant idea hopefully in its death-throes. Whether this takes ten years, fifty years or happens in a heart-beat I don’t know. I can feel it coming however, and I urge you to start right now finding all the ways possible to heal your heart, change your mind and exercise your voice: as the real you, the authentic you, the unique and unrepeating miracle that you are. In every moment there is choice, and you are indeed the architect of your life and the champion of change the world is calling forth now.

Dream Your Life, Live Your Dream and go forth and conquer, remember uROk and you seriously rock!

With love and light,

Sari

PS: So don't be surprised if when you meet me, I'm wearing a pin stripe suit, or a white linen outfit or even a pair of rockstar jeans with some killer heels. I'm just being me - perfectly and authentically me - no matter which hat I happen to be wearing at the time!

One Direction by Franko & Kings Lyrics:

There comes a time when we must give in

To the force that's driving us within

The one that makes us better

The one that ignites our fire

The one that flies you higher

All it takes is...

One moment in life

One second of time

One blink of an eye

One smile warm heart

One direction to a new start

One belief in who you are

Sometimes its hard to get out of bed

But what you give is what you get

You gotta live to have regrets...

Like the time that you weren't sure

When you could have given more

Felt that feeling in your core...

All it takes is...

One moment in life

One second of time

One blink of an eye

One smile warm heart

One direction to a new start

One belief in who you are

Unleash the person that you are

Coz we are all shining stars

Believe in you and you will be

Everything you dreamed of

And so much more...you'll see
